People are calling Kanye’s side-chat at his London show on Saturday night a full-on rant, which Rolling Stone surmised as “largely focused on the relationship between art and commerce”. I’ll be honest here. Before watching this video I had my apprehensions. “No,” I begged YouTube. “Don’t let us hate on Mr. West any more then we have to already!” But I watched anyway and was surprised. The media has Kanye made out to be this weird monster, but I just think he was communicating on a really visceral and real level his misgivings about the entertainment industry.
As transcribed at Rolling Stone, “Can I sell a drink for you please? So you can help me put on a better show. Please corporations. Can you please support me, Kanye West? I swear I’m a nice n—- now. I swear I’ll put the pink polo back on. I swear to you. Please? Just for three million dollars. I need it so bad. I need a new pool in my back yard. So I’ll tell all my fans your s— is cool. And if they believe in me they should also believe in you. . . . What’s my public rating now? Are people liking me again? Enough to get some money for some corporations? They forgot about the whole Beyonce thing right? Okay cool.”
Watch Kanye’s “rant” for yourself here. But viewer’s discretion is advised (he has some pretty colourful language) and tell us what you think in the comments section.
