Movie Review: Race 2 Since 2008, the creativity of directors in the industry has changed a lot. When Race released that year, the people really loved it, even though it was another Hollywood rip off.
5 years later, director duo Abbas-Mustan decided to come up with a sequel that promises a lot more action, more glamor and much better back drops. So to start off with, Race 2 is a glitzy, action-packed entertainer. Scratch the surface – in fact, that is all there is to the film, and if you like superficial style and girls dancing around in Bikini’s then this one is your type.
But, then, isn’t that the failsafe formula that has stood many a Bollywood pulp-maker in good stead over the years?
Coming to the point, Race 2 isn’t so much a sequel as an ill-advised rehash. Revenge, one character says, is a dish best served cold. Ideas, for sure, aren’t best served stale.
Race 2 is the story of two men Ranveer Singh (Saif Ali) and Armaan Malik (John Abraham) who are in a dispute and are trying to get the better of each other with fully ripped physiques who perform stunts that are hardly believable.
Ranveer treads through the world of the Indian mafia in Turkey as he looks to avenge the death of his lover and partner in crime. In this journey, he comes across a whole bunch of goons and they are high octane action scenes with cars exploding and Ranveer (most of the time) beating the guys up.
Armaan wants Ranveer dead and holds him responsible for his fathers death. This is all you need to know about the film, as the plot is loose and u can predict the film, way before it’s climax.
Saif, who was also there in the prequel does a decent job. The brawny John Abraham ensures that the sequel has a markedly higher beefcake and testosterone quotient.
Anil Kapoor is okay in his part. We are wondering why Ameesha was roped into the film, she should probably consider modelling and give up acting as the only thing she does good is flaunt her curvy body through the entire film.
Jazqueline Fernandez and Deepika Padukone don’t have a meaty role. They are clearly in the film just for the glamor quotient as they are fully decked up but have nowhere to go.
On the whole, Race 2 is slickly packaged around dramatic twists and turns that fly at you thicker and faster than you care to count. Go for it only if you’re a huge fan of one of the leading actors.
